OBESITY AND PREVENTION
Overweight and obesity are labels for ranges of weight that are greater than what is generally considered healthy for a given height. The terms also identify ranges of weight that have been shown to increase the likelihood of certain diseases and other health problems.
Obesity is a problem faced by millions of individuals all over the world. Modern day stressful life has resulted in people ignoring their health. Health professionals and people are now waking up to the seriousness of this health problem. As per statistics 66% of people in United States over the age of 20 are identified to be overweight.
Struggling with being overweight or obese is compounded by the fact that our society markets unhealthy foods loaded with chemicals and additives that induce the body to store fat. Our body stores fat and we become overweight. We eat too many calories, and the wrong calories. It is sad. Not only are we overweight, we are under-nourished.
Sedentary lifestyles are fostered with the proliferation of video games that entertain our children and us. We have forgotten how to or choose not to promote an active lifestyle for our youth and ourselves. And we opt for convenience foods over preparing whole healthy meals at home. We eat out of the package and do not choose healthy fresh foods.
While many people may be aware of obesity, not many know the diseases associated with obesity. Being obese can cause any one or more of these diseases... to name a few:
Cardiovascular Problems: Obese people have elevated cholesterol levels and this in turn can result in many heart related problems.
Endocrine Problems: menstrual disturbances and infertility.
Gastrointestinal Problems: GERD, Fatty Liver, Gallstones, hernias, and colorectal cancer.
Renal and Genitourinary: Erectile Dysfunction, Urinary Incontinence, Chronic Renal Failure, Hypogonadism, Breast Cancer, and Uterine Cancer.
Integument (skin and appendages): Stretch Marks, Lymphedema, and Cellulitis.
Musculoskeletal: Immobility, Hyperuricemia, Osteoarthritis, and Low Back Pain.
Neurological: Stroke, Headache, and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Respiratory: Dyspnea, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Hyperventilation Syndrome, Asthma, and Pickwickian Syndrome and then of course there are
Psychological factors of being overweight or obese. One can get caught up in the cycle of overeating due to depression; then being depressed because of their weight. Wanting to lose weight, but gaining more.
There are proven methods to lose weight, trim body fat and reclaim your health. Each of us can take action to improve our lives and to help others who are placing themselves in jeopardy by practice and promotion of healthy lifestyles and following a healthy eating plan.
Fad diets, surgeries, or magic pills are not the answer. These can put your health in more jeopardy and they don't work.
